Kids are great. Honestly, ha ha! It might not feel like it at 2am when they drag you from your bed. Or when they knock over their drink even though you’ve asked them to sit down, like, 45 times. And when they can’t just put on their shoes and get in the flipping car. Deep breaths…

But no matter how hard we all moan (and we do), having kids is awesome. It may be hard, but looking after my daughter is the best job. So I decided to make this list of 10 brilliant things about being a parent (so I can remember it when my child is screaming face down on the floor in the supermarket!)

1 KIDS ARE HILARIOUS!

“Daddy!” Grace beams, pointing at a picture of a chimpanzee, and I promise I didn’t put her up to it. I laugh with her a little bit more every day and it’s ace.

2 YOU ALWAYS DESERVE TREATS

Keeping another human alive is a good reason to treat yourself, so you can always justify eating cake.

3 DAYTIME NAPS RULE

It is completely fine as a parent to dive into bed whenever your kids fall asleep. Yes the 5am starts suck, but the after-lunch naps are amazing!

4 YOU ARE GOD

I am Grace’s favourite person to hang out with. I know in a few years I’ll be embarrassing and annoying but right now Grace thinks I’m god and I like it.

5 YOU GET TO SNACK ON CHICKEN NUGGETS

When you’re putting the kids’ tea in the oven you always add a few fish fingers and smiley faces for you, right?

6 YOU REALLY APPRECIATE HAPPINESS

All that adrenaline from no sleep, hormones pinging around, things being difficult… and then one thing goes right and you feel so incredible that you weep.

7 YOU MAKE FRIENDS

Parenting is the next best thing to alcohol when meeting new people. I have discussed the poor function of my pelvic floor with people whose names I can’t remember.

8 FART JOKES ARE THE BEST

I laugh hardest when people break wind and fall over, so it’s nice to hang out with someone who finds this even more hilarious than me.

9 YOU CAN BE A CHILD

It turns out I really like playing with play dough, reading kids’ books and watching animated films. And you can do all these things with wine.

10 YOU GET SO MUCH LOVE
When Grace wraps her hands around my neck, kisses me and says, “Love you mummy” there is no better feeling in the world.
