Finding healthy snacks your kids actually want to eat can be tricky, so we knew we were onto a winner with these easy cereal bar recipes. They're brilliant for breakfast, ideal for lunchboxes and perfect for after school.

When hunger strikes, reach for these healthy homemade cereal bars by family food writer Caroline Morrish. They feature favourite cereals, including Rice Krispies, Bran Flakes and Cornflakes. And you set them in the freezer, which means they’re super easy for you to make with your kids. 

1. Chocolate branflake cereal bars

You will need: 
(Makes 12)

  • 10g coconut oil
  • 50g maple syrup
  • 50g dark chocolate chips
  • 130g branflakes
  • 30g dried cherries, chopped
  • 2 tsp toasted mixed seeds

Method:

  1. Grease a 20cm x 20cm baking tray and line the base with baking paper.
  2. Put the coconut oil and maple syrup in a pan and heat gently until the coconut oil has melted. Stir in the majority of the chocolate (reserving some for the top) and take off the heat, then continue to stir until the chocolate has melted.
  3. Stir in the branflakes and the majority of the dried cherries (reserving some for the top), crushing with the spoon a little as you do, until everything is well combined.
  4. Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and press down so it is packed in an even layer. Sprinkle with the remaining chocolate and cherries, and the toasted seeds, and press these in lightly.
  5. Freeze for 2-3 hours, or overnight, then cut into bars and eat or store in the freezer for 2 weeks.

Cranberry Cornflake bar

2. Cornflake and cranberry cereal bars

You will need:

Makes 15)

  • 250g Greek yogurt
  • 100g strawberry yogurt, plus extra for drizzling
  • 130g cornflakes, plus extra for topping
  • 30g dried cranberries, chopped

Method:

  1. Grease a 20cm x 20cm baking tin and line the base with baking paper.
  2. Put the Greek yogurt and the strawberry yogurt into a large mixing bowl then stir in the cornflakes, crushing with the spoon as you do. Then stir in the majority of the cranberries (reserving some for decoration) and spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and press down.
  3. Drizzle with a little extra strawberry yogurt and sprinkle with the remaining cranberries and a few more cornflakes.
  4. Freeze for 2-3 hours, or overnight, then cut into bars and eat or store in the freezer for 2 weeks.

3. Rice Krispie coconut cereal bars

You will need: 
(Makes 15)

  • 350g Greek yogurt
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 70g Rice Krispies or popped rice cereal
  • 20g desiccated coconut
  • 25g raisins
  • 10g freeze dried strawberries, roughly chopped

What to do:

  1. Grease a 20cm x 20cm baking tin and line the base with baking paper.
  2. Put the Greek yogurt and honey into a large mixing bowl and stir to combine. Stir in the Rice Krispies, coconut, raisins and the majority of the freeze-dried strawberries (reserving a few for decoration). Crush the Rice Krispies a little as you stir.
  3. Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and press down. Scatter with the remaining freeze-dried strawberries and press down a little.
  4. Freeze for 2-3 hours, or overnight, then cut into bars and eat or store in the freezer for 2 weeks.
