5 easy makes using kitchen roll tubes

Make the most of a kitchen hero

Written by Gabrielle Meredith-Elsworth

Kitchen roll really is the unsung hero of our lives. Apple juice knocked over? Kitchen roll! Child’s shoe (or scooter) covered in dog poo? Kitchen roll! Potty training not going as planned? Kitchen roll! It serves us well right down to the very last sheet.

But what to do with all of those empty rolls? Here are 5 easy crafts to try. They each give 5 minutes of time back to you, so you can chill and reset before the next spillage.

1) 3…2…1 Blast off! Reach for the stars with this rocket.

What you’ll need: kitchen roll tube, wrapping paper, card, orange tissue paper, scissors and PVA glue, star stickers (optional)

What to do:

1. Get your child to wrap the wrapping paper round the kitchen roll tube and stick in place. They could even add star stickers!
2. Then roll a cone from card and get your little one to glue to the top of the tube.
3. Ask your child to tear flames from orange tissue paper and stick to the bottom of the rocket. Count backward from 10 to launch your make!

What you’ll need: kitchen roll tube, paint, beads or buttons or stickers, PVA glue

What to do:

1. Get your little one to paint the kitchen roll tube and leave to dry.
2. Then let them loose gluing all sorts to the tube: beads, buttons or even just stickers! What can they spot through their telescope?

What you’ll need: kitchen roll tube, paint, scissors, glue, felt tips

What to do:

1. Ask your little one to paint the tube their favourite colour then leave to dry.
2. Cut down into the tube to make a head shape on one side and a tail shape on the other.
3. Cut four small rectangles in the bottom of the tube to make feet.
4. Ask your child to fold both the head and tail over.
5. Draw two eyes onto the head and toes on the feet. You could even make it some leaves to munch on!
