5 Diwali activities

Diwali, the festival of lights, starts today.

Over the next five days it will be celebrated around the world by Hindus, Sikhs, Jain people and – if we have our way – all of the children whose parents subscribe to 5 Minute Fun!

If you’re not sure where to start, here are 5 easy things to do in 5 minutes or longer with your little ones.

Candle craft: Paint cardboard tubes – how they paint them is up to them. Then snip out a pretend flame from gold paper or tin foil painted gold, and glue it on top.

Firework art: Use colourful chalks to draw fireworks onto black paper.

Light up bathtub: Take glow sticks into the bathtub at bath time and dim the lights.

Leaf art: Pick up an autumn leaf – one of the ones that’s glowing with colour. Then give them a white, silver or gold felt tip and let them squiggle all over it.

Diwali snack: Take a plain cracker and top with cream cheese on top. Then fashion a candle from veg – we found a cucumber base and pepper flame worked well for both creativity and deliciousness.

These crafts are also great to do with small groups of preschoolers or in a school or nursery setting. Spread the love and inspiration to Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest using the social media buttons below!
