Terrible puns aside, these 5-minute experiments use stuff from home to show how materials can change from solid to liquid (or vice versa).
Once they’re set up, you can conduct your own experiment – in which you immerse coffee in water, watch it infuse, drink it and feel almost human.
1 MIXING Mix water and cornflour in a bowl and let them stir and squish it. The great thing about cornflour is that it feels like both a solid and a liquid when you squeeze it.
2 MELTING Give them ice cubes to play with. They can zoom them on a tray like cars. As they hold them they’ll feel their state change from a solid to a liquid.
3 SUSPENDING Add glitter to water so they can see the particles floating. Science AND glitter — what more could you wish for?
