Craft brightly coloured aliens out of toilet paper rolls

Take me to your leader...
by Natalie Keeler

Aren't these cool little creatures just brilliant? We love this craft – it's a chance for kids to get really creative and make their own toilet roll alien look as weird and wonderful as they'd like.

If your child loved this (and you have a few loo rolls left over), you could help them make their own toilet roll rocket too.

You will need:

  • Toilet paper roll tubes
  • Paintbrush
  • Paint
  • Paper
  • Card
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Pens

How to make this toilet roll alien

Step 1

Set your child up so they can paint the toilet roll tube a bright colour.

Step 2

Ask them to draw and cut out ears, eyes and a mouth.

Step 3

Now they can stick them onto their alien.

Step 4

Pipe cleaner antennae will add the finishing touch!

Learning guide

The physical elements of this make (cutting, sticking and painting) all help develop your little one's fine motor skills. See if your child can think about the differences between the aliens they’ve created and humans. Can they tell you what makes an alien an alien? What would their alien sound like? How would they move? These questions will encourage kids to create a whole character of their own imagining – and it's also a good way to start children off with discussing big ideas and concepts.
