You're just 10 minutes away from a homemade rocket that's out of this world
If your child loves space, we can guarantee they'll have the time of their lives crafting this awesome toilet roll rocket. Once their creation is complete, challenge them to count backwards from 10, then blast off! Can they land their shuttle safely on a planet far, far away?
You will need
- Toilet paper roll tubes
- Wrapping paper
- Sticky tape
- Card
- Tissue paper
- Scissors
- Glue
- Pens
Method
1. Ask your child to wrap the wrapping paper around the toilet roll tube and stick in place. If they’d like, they could decorate it with pens, or sticky stars!
2. Roll a cone from card and tape it, then they can glue it the top of the tube.
3. Ask your child to tear tissue paper flames and stick them to the bottom of the rocket.
Play idea: Ask your little one to drop a favourite little plastic toy into the tube and take them for a ride in space.

The physical elements of this make (cutting, sticking and painting) all help develop kids' fine motor skills. Don't worry too much if the painting gets messy – this is a great way for them to express their creativity. Once their rocket is made and they’ve blasted it off into space, ask your child to think about what else is in space. Will their rocket go past the moon? The stars? Can they name any planets it might pass? Space is a brilliant 'gateway subject' to get little ones interested in science, so have some fun with it.
